About the Hackathon
The GitLab Hackathon is a quarterly virtual community event where anyone can contribute to GitLab's open-source projects—whether through code, documentation, UX design, translations, or other ways. January 2026 marks the latest edition, focusing on collaboration, skill-building, and innovation within the GitLab ecosystem.
It's open to all levels—new contributors are welcome, with beginner-friendly issues available via Discord and the contributor portal. Participants use tools like GitLab Duo AI to accelerate contributions, and track progress on a live leaderboard
What to Contribute
Contributions earn points on the leaderboard and can include:
- Code: Merge Requests (MRs) to GitLab repositories (most impactful)
- Documentation: Improving docs, handbooks, or guides
- UX/UI Design: Wireframes, mockups, or design improvements
- Translations: Localising GitLab for global users
- Community Engagement: Forum posts, Discord interactions, event notes
- Bonus Activities: Bug smashing, themed issues, or content creation
During the hackathon week, community contribution MRs are auto-tagged with hackathon and count toward points. At least one MR must be merged to qualify for prizes.
